Decoding the App Store Age Rating System and What Each Tier Means
The App Store assigns age ratings to every app based on its content: 4+, 9+, 12+, 17+, and in some regions, 18+. A 4+ rating means the app contains no objectionable material: no realistic violence, no profanity, no mature themes. A 9+ rating permits mild cartoon violence and infrequent mild language. A 12+ rating allows more intense violence, suggestive themes, and moderate profanity. A 17+ rating is reserved for apps with frequent intense violence, sexual content, or gambling with real money. These ratings are self-reported by developers and reviewed by Apple, but they are not perfect. A social media app like Instagram is rated 12+ even though the content users post is unmoderated and can include anything. The age rating reflects the app built-in content, not user-generated content. This distinction is critical for parents: a 12+ rating on a social app does not mean your 12-year-old will only see 12+ appropriate content. Treat age ratings as a floor, not a guarantee, and always check what user-generated content the app exposes. Regional variations also matter; an app rated 12+ in the United States may carry a different rating in Europe or Asia due to different regulatory frameworks, so if you travel internationally, the same app may show different age labels.
Setting Up Family Sharing and Creating a Child Apple ID
Before configuring parental controls, you need a Family Sharing group and a child Apple ID for each child. On your iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > Family Sharing and tap Set Up Your Family. Follow the prompts to invite your partner as a co-parent. To create a child account, tap Add Member and select Create Child Account. You will enter the child name and birthdate; Apple uses the birthdate to enforce age restrictions automatically. The child must be under 13 (or under 16 in some regions) to qualify for a child account. Once created, the child Apple ID allows them to use iMessage, FaceTime, and the App Store under your supervision. Ask to Buy is enabled by default for child accounts, meaning every app download (even free ones) requires your approval. This is your most powerful tool for controlling what your child installs. You can disable Ask to Buy for a teenager you trust, but keep it on for younger children. Each child account is linked to your family until they turn 13, at which point they can manage their own account. Set up the child account on your own device first, then sign in on the child device so you can configure restrictions before handing it over.
Apple ID
Configuring Content Restrictions to Block Apps by Age Tier
On the child device or through Family Sharing remotely, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. Toggle on Content & Privacy Restrictions at the top, then tap Store, Web, Siri & Search Restrictions (or iTunes & App Store Purchase Restrictions on older iOS). Under Apps, select the highest age rating you want the child to access: 4+, 9+, 12+, or 17+. Selecting 9+ means the child cannot download any app rated 12+ or higher; these apps will not appear in search results and cannot be opened even if previously installed. Be aware that setting the limit too low can block educationally appropriate apps; a 4+ restriction will block many math and reading apps rated 9+ for containing mild competition elements. A good starting point is 9+ for children under 10 and 12+ for pre-teens. You can adjust the limit anytime without unlocking the child device if you manage it through Family Sharing. Also restrict In-App Purchases to Do Not Allow unless you want to enable supervised spending through Ask to Buy for specific occasions.
Using Screen Time Downtime and App Limits to Manage Usage Patterns
Screen Time offers two complementary tools: Downtime and App Limits. Downtime blocks all apps except those you specifically allow, enforcing a schedule like 8 PM to 7 AM when only phone calls and messages work. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Downtime, set a start and end time, and choose which apps are always allowed (phone, messages, education apps). App Limits let you cap daily usage for specific categories, like 30 minutes for games or 1 hour for social media. Go to Settings > Screen Time > App Limits > Add Limit and select categories or specific apps. When the limit is reached, the app icon dims and a time limit message blocks access; the child can tap Ask for More Time to send a request to your device, where you can approve 15 minutes, 1 hour, or deny. This request system is more effective than a hard block because it creates a conversation about screen use rather than a technical wall. Review the Screen Time weekly report together to discuss which apps consume the most time and whether those apps are appropriate.
Reviewing App Content Categories Beyond Age Ratings: In-App Purchases and Chat
Age ratings do not capture every risk factor. An app rated 9+ can still include in-app purchases, unmonitored chat, or advertising. To evaluate these, read the App Store listing information section before allowing installation. Look for the In-App Purchases line, which shows the price range of purchases inside the app. Also check for chat features: if the listing mentions multiplayer, social, or community features, the app likely includes unmoderated chat with strangers. Games like Roblox and Minecraft are rated 12+ but contain open chat that exposes children to inappropriate language and grooming attempts. The listing also shows whether the app includes advertising and whether ads are age-appropriate. A practical checklist for each app: Does it have in-app purchases? Does it include chat with strangers? Does it require location access? Does it show third-party ads? If any answer is yes, the app requires additional supervision regardless of its age rating. Use Ask to Buy as your checkpoint: when the child requests an app, review these factors before approving.
Setting Up Approvals for In-App Purchases and Ask to Buy
Ask to Buy is the cornerstone of parental control for purchases. When enabled, any app download, including free apps and in-app purchases, sends a notification to your device. You can approve or deny from anywhere. To verify it is on, go to Settings > [your name] > Family Sharing, tap the child name, and confirm Ask to Buy is toggled on. For in-app purchases specifically, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Store, Web, Siri & Search Restrictions > In-App Purchases and select Do Not Allow. This blocks all in-app purchases regardless of Ask to Buy, which is safer for young children who might tap purchase buttons without understanding. For older children who you want to teach financial responsibility, keep In-App Purchases allowed but rely on Ask to Buy to review each transaction. When you receive an Ask to Buy notification, you see the app name, the price, and the developer name; take 10 seconds to verify the developer is reputable before approving. If you deny, the child receives a message that the request was declined.
Auditing Installed Apps Periodically and Removing Inappropriate Content
Even with controls in place, children accumulate apps over time that you may not have reviewed. Set a monthly habit of sitting down with the child and scrolling through all installed apps. Go to the App Library or Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see a list sorted by size. For each app you do not recognize, ask the child what it does and check its App Store listing together. Look for red flags: apps with social features, apps with in-app purchases, apps from unknown developers, and apps rated above the child age tier. Delete any app that is inappropriate by long-pressing the icon and selecting Remove App. Also check the child Safari browsing history and review which apps have access to the camera and microphone in Settings > Privacy & Security. A child device can accumulate tracking permissions, chat apps disguised as calculators, and games that quietly added social features in an update. The monthly audit catches these before they become problems. Make it a collaborative review rather than a surveillance exercise so the child learns to self-evaluate apps.
Transitioning Controls as Children Grow: From Full Lockdown to Gradual Autonomy
Parental controls should evolve as children mature. For children under 10, the recommended setup is strict: Ask to Buy enabled, content restrictions set to 9+, all in-app purchases blocked, and Downtime scheduled from 7 PM to 7 AM. At ages 10 to 12, consider raising the content restriction to 12+ and allowing specific in-app purchases through Ask to Buy for apps you have vetted. Introduce App Limits for entertainment categories while leaving education apps unrestricted. For teenagers 13 to 15, you can disable Ask to Buy for free apps while keeping it for paid apps and in-app purchases. Raise content restrictions to 17+ only if you have reviewed the specific apps they want to use. At 16 and older, consider removing most restrictions but keep Location Sharing on so you can see their location in Find My. The transition should be gradual and accompanied by conversations about digital citizenship: explaining why certain apps are risky, how to recognize phishing, and what to do if they encounter inappropriate content. Use the Screen Time weekly report as a conversation starter rather than a surveillance tool. The goal is to build internal judgment so that when they turn 18 and controls disappear entirely, they have already developed healthy digital habits.
