Stop if a simple utility demands contacts, always-on location, VPN configuration, or broad tracking with no credible explanation. Free can still be expensive when the product is monetized through data or irreversible device changes.

The app is not maintained
Old apps can break on new iOS versions, accumulate security debt, or abandon subscription support. If the listing has not been meaningfully updated for a long time and reviews mention abandonment, skip it.

You can solve the job with less risk
Built-in iOS features, reputable open alternatives, or a known paid app with transparent pricing may be safer than a free unknown. The goal is not installing more apps; the goal is solving the task with acceptable risk.
